Matt was born in Staten Island, N.Y. in 1957. He graduated from Delaware Valley High School in 1976 and from Penn State University in 1983 with a BA in History. Matt worked locally for Luhrs Hardware in Milford for 35 years while going to school and after graduation. This career in small business trained him to respect small-town values and to assist residents with their everyday issues. Working in a hardware store also taught him how to solve problems. As a county commissioner and community leader that is exactly what Matt has done since 1987 when he started on the Milford Borough Council.
Matt served a total of 25 years on the Borough Council, 22 years of which he spent as President. As Borough President, Matt tirelessly worked to protect Milford's historical character and small-town charm. In 1998, he led the way in establishing the Historical Architectural Review Board (HARB) to ensure the preservation of Milford's historic legacy. He provided instrumental efforts in securing countless grants that rejuvenated sidewalks, street corners and parks throughout the Borough.
In 2011, the people of Pike County elected Matt to his first term as Pike County Commissioner. He is currently serving his third term, bringing years of dedicated service to local residents.
Matt has had the honor to work with five different talented and distinguished County Commissioners: Karl Wagner, Rich Caridi, Ron Schmalzle, Steve Guccini, and Tony Waldron. For much of his time on the board, Matt served as Chairman, leading the meetings and setting the agenda for the County. Through his decade of service, his fellow commissioners and he accomplished many important goals. Highlights include: The construction of a new County Courthouse to better serve and accommodate our growing county, the refurbishment of the Mott Street Bridge to preserve a historical landmark and provide better, safer access to the area's natural beauty, the creation of the Tick-Borne Disease Task Force to provide public health resources to the community, and the expansion of senior housing to fill the need for affordable and accessible accommodations for area senior citizens.
Matt is an active member of Saint Patrick's Church in Milford. He also belongs to the John Paul II Knights of Columbus and the Port Jervis Elks Club. He previously served as the Chairman of Pike County United Way and currently serves on the boards of the Minisink Valley Historical Society and the Pike County Chamber of Commerce. Matt also serves as President of Milford Community House Association where he organized the effort to bring a much-needed visitors center to the eastern region of Pike County.
In addition to his many civic responsibilities, Matt has also authored five local history books: Matamoras to Shohola: A Journey Through Time, Port Jervis, Dingmans Ferry, Port Jervis: Then and Now, and The Delaware and Hudson Canal and Gravity Railroad. In 1999, Matt was given the coveted Upper Delaware Heritage Alliance Award for his book Matamoras to
Shohola: A Journey Through Time. In October of 2022, Matt was inducted into the Delaware Valley High School Hall of Fame. This distinguished award recognizes his many years of community service.
